When someone needs medical attention they will go see their doctor. The doctor will diagnosis the issue and then prescribe the proper treatment or therapy to combat this issue. If there is an issue that would need special attention your doctor would then tell you that you will need to see a specialist. When it comes to your hearing, that specialist is called an audiologist.
An audiologist is a health-care professional specializing in identifying, diagnosing, treating, and monitoring disorders of the auditory and vestibular systems. Audiologists are trained to diagnose, manage and/or treat hearing, tinnitus, or balance problems. An audiologist is not a doctor, however many do get their doctorate degree (Au. D.) and then become a Doctor of Audiology.
Even if a person does not have a hearing issue, getting a regular hearing assessment, similar to when you get your regular physical can be beneficial.
An audiologist can make sure your ears and hearing is healthy. They can examine the physical appearance of your ears as well as your hearing ability. Treatment plans can include using a hearing aid or removal of ear wax to eliminate your diminished hearing so you can hear clearly again.
In regards to hearing aids, an audiologist can counsel a person during those first few months of transition so that they can use them effectively and begin to enjoy a better quality of life.
Improved hearing enhances your quality of life in many ways. It allows you to enjoy everyday sounds, communicate effectively with others, and minimize misunderstandings.
You should visit an audiologist as often as you visit your doctor or dentist. Get a hearing assessment regularly even if you do not have pre-existing conditions. You may only discover you have a hearing problem when you visit an audiologist.
