Proper Speaker Positioning

Proper Speaker Positioning

For good or for bad, watching TV has become one of America's favorite past times since the 1950's.  Over the last year because of the pandemic, more people relied on their TV for information and entertainment than ever before.

While watching what is on the screen is important, if you can not hear properly as to what is going on, then you can lose most of the message that is being relayed to you.

So when you watch TV, how do you setup your speakers properly?  This is becoming an increasingly popular theme for when dealing with flat panel TV's that are wall mounted.  Wall mounting takes up less space and gives you more room for speaker placement, especially if a TV stand is no longer needed.

If the speaker are too close, the sound will blend together and sound muddy (this is not an issue with ChairSpeaker) or if they are too far apart there will be gaps between the two halves of the stereo image.  Ideally, you would want to position the speakers so the tweeters are about the same height of your ears.

If side placement isn't practical, you can place your speakers a few feet behind your listening position and face them forward.  You will want your speakers to be about one to two feet above your ear level to get the best sound effects.   Place your speakers one to two feet above your ear level for immersive special effects.

When placing the speakers, they should be at least two to three feet away from the nearest wall.  Many speakers have rear facing bass ports.  Positioning a rear bass port too close to the wall will reflect sound waves, resulting in time smearing.
